Stilicho was a very important military leader in the Roman Empire. He was born to a Vandal father and a Roman mother.

His name likely meant "calm" or "quiet" in his father's language. Even with his mixed background, he lived as a Roman. He served in the army under the great leader Theodosius I. Theodosius was the last ruler of a united Roman Empire. Stilicho rose quickly through the many ranks of the military. He became a trusted man for the imperial family.

His life changed when he married a woman named Serena. Serena was the niece of Emperor Theodosius I. This marriage helped him gain much more power. They had one son named Eucherius and two daughters. Their children were named Maria and Thermantia. Stilicho became the guardian for the young emperor Honorius. Honorius was too young to rule the Western Empire alone. This role made Stilicho the real leader of the West.

Stilicho spent many years fighting to protect Roman lands. He fought a big battle at the Frigidus river. During this war, he worked with a leader named Alaric. Alaric led the Goths but later became Stilicho's main enemy. Stilicho also led armies against the Franks in Gaul. He fought to stop a revolt in Africa led by Gildo. He even led a campaign in Britain against the Picts.

Being a leader was a very hard job for him. He had to deal with many different enemies at once. In the year 397, he fought Alaric in Macedonia. He won that fight, but Alaric escaped into the mountains. In the year 400, Stilicho received the highest Roman honor. This special title was called consul. He used his military strength to keep his control. He even married his daughters to the emperor Honorius.

However, having so much power made many people angry. Stilicho had many rivals in the royal courts. Some leaders in the East did not trust him. These enemies worked hard to take his power away. After many struggles, his enemies finally caught him. In the year 408, Stilicho was arrested and executed. His death was a major event for the empire. It showed how difficult it was to lead Rome.
