Stilicho was a powerful leader in the Roman Empire. He was born to a Vandal father and a Roman mother. He joined the Roman army and rose through the ranks. He worked for the great leader Theodosius I. This leader was the last to rule both halves of the empire.

Stilicho married a woman named Serena. She was the niece of Theodosius I. This marriage helped him become very important. They had one son and two daughters. After Theodosius died, Stilicho became the guardian for the young emperor Honorius. This made Stilicho the main leader of the Western Roman army.

He fought many wars to protect Rome. He fought against the Goths led by Alaric. He also fought tribes in Gaul and in Africa. He even led a campaign in Britain.

But Stilicho had many enemies in the palace. These people did not trust him. They worked to take his power away. In the year 408, he was arrested and killed. His fall was a very sad time for the empire.
