He served under Emperor Justinian I. The emperor wanted to win back lands from the old Western Roman Empire. Belisarius helped make this happen by winning many battles. Many people call him one of the "Last of the Romans." He was known for winning even when he had very few resources. This made him one of the greatest commanders in history.

Belisarius built a special group of soldiers to help him. These men were called bucellarii. They were elite heavy cavalry who served as his personal guards.

They were very well-equipped for fighting. His soldiers used long swords called spatha. They also used lances and composite bows. These bows allowed them to shoot at a distance like the Huns. This group of 7,000 men became the core of his armies.

His career had both hard times and great wins. Early on, he faced some defeats in battles like Mindouos. However, Justinian I gave him more chances to lead. In the year 530, Belisarius won a big victory at the Battle of Dara.

He used clever tricks to win this fight. For example, he dug trenches to trap the enemy forces. This smart move helped him defeat the Sassanid army.
