They played a huge role in the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Their movements helped create the medieval Europe we know today. Some historians believe they came from Scandinavia a long time ago.

A writer named Jordanes wrote about this in his book called the Getica. He said they moved to the Vistula River area in Poland. This story is part of their long tribal tradition.

For a long time, the Goths lived in new lands.

By the 3rd century AD, they lived north of the Danube River. This area is in parts of Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania today. Archaeologists find evidence of their life in the Chernyakhov culture. They often raided Roman lands during this time. Many Goths even joined the Roman military to serve. This was a way for them to live near the empire.

In the late 4th century, life became very hard for the Goths.

Groups called the Alans and Huns moved from the east. This movement pushed the Goths toward the Roman border. Many Goths moved to the Lower Danube to find safety. This caused conflict with the Roman people. In 378, Goths led forces to a big victory at the Battle of Adrianople. After this, many eastern peoples settled near the empire.

Different groups of Goths eventually built their own strong kingdoms.

Another group was the Ostrogoths, who gained independence in the 5th century. Their leader was Theodoric the Great. He built the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy at Ravenna.

Even though the kingdoms changed, the name Goth stayed important.

The Visigothic Kingdom in Spain lasted until the 8th century. A small part survived in Asturias under a leader named Pelagius. In Crimea, the Crimean Goths kept their culture for over a thousand years. Today, we use the word "Gothic" for many things. We see it in architecture and in literature. It is also used for a modern subculture. These things get their names from the ancient Goths.
