The Battle of Lechfeld was a major series of fights in the year 955. It took place in a flat area called a flood plain near the river Lech. This battle was very important for the future of Europe. This victory changed how people lived in the region. It stopped many groups from invading Western Europe.

The battle happened because the Magyars wanted to raid German lands. The Magyars were a group of people who used horses and bows. They had between 8,000 and 10,000 horse archers. These soldiers liked to fight from a distance. They wore very light armor to stay fast on their horses.

This was different from the German soldiers. The Germans used heavy cavalry and infantry. They wore much heavier armor for close combat. This difference in how they fought shaped the whole battle.

King Otto I the Great led the German army to stop the invaders. He moved his troops to meet the Magyars near the city of Augsburg. The city was under siege by the Hungarian army. Bishop Ulrich helped defend the city from the inside.

Otto I organized his army into eight different groups called legions. He wanted to trap the Magyars so they could not escape. He even sent orders to hold the river crossings in the east. He wanted to make sure the invaders could not go back home easily.

The fighting began in earnest on August 10, 955. A Hungarian surprise attack first hit the German rear group. Then, the main armies met on the field. The German heavy cavalry fought the Magyars in close combat. The Germans won this part of the fight.

The Magyars retreated in good order at first. However, the weather changed on August 11 and 12. Heavy rain fell and caused big floods. The rain made the Magyars' bows hard to use. This turned their retreat into a disaster.

This battle had a huge effect on history. Because of this win, Otto I became a very powerful leader. His army even called him the father of the fatherland. Later, in 962, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor.
