The Battle of Lechfeld was a series of military engagements in August 955. It took place on the Lechfeld, which is a flood plain along the river Lech. This conflict involved the Kingdom of Germany and the Hungarian army, also known as the Magyars. The battle is considered a turning point in European history. It ended the era of frequent Magyar invasions into Latin Europe. The victory helped secure the future of the German kingdom.

The conflict began when the Magyars invaded the Duchy of Bavaria in early summer 955. They arrived with a force of 8,000 to 10,000 horse archers, along with infantry and siege engines. Their primary goal was to draw the main German army into an open field to destroy it. The Magyars laid siege to the city of Augsburg. Inside the city, Bishop Ulrich led the defense. He instructed his soldiers to reinforce the main south gate rather than fighting in the open.

King Otto I the Great led the German response to the invasion. He organized his army into eight distinct divisions called legions. These included troops from Bavaria, Swabia, Franconia, and Bohemia. Otto also led a central unit called the legio regia, which consisted of his personal guard. This royal contingent included Saxons and Thuringians. Otto's total force likely numbered between 7,000 and 9,000 troops. He aimed to trap the Magyars so they could not escape to their homeland.

The two armies used very different military styles. The Magyars relied on mounted archers who fought from a distance. They wore light armor to maintain speed on their horses. This style was effective for raids but had specific weaknesses. For example, it was difficult to raise enough battle-ready horses. Additionally, their bows became ineffective during heavy rain. In contrast, the German army relied on heavy cavalry and infantry. These soldiers wore much heavier armor designed for close combat.

The fighting began on 10 August 955. A Hungarian surprise attack first destroyed the Bohemian rearguard legion. However, Conrad, Duke of Lorraine, led a counter-attack with heavy cavalry to disperse the attackers. Soon after, Otto I brought his main force into battle against the primary Hungarian army. The German heavy cavalry engaged the lightly armed Magyars in close combat. While the Germans won the initial clash, the Magyars managed to retreat in good order.

The situation changed drastically over the next two days. On 11 and 12 August, heavy rainfall and flooding occurred. This inclement weather hindered the retreating Magyars and made their bows useless. The German troops used this advantage to hunt them down. The Hungarian leaders, including Harka Bulcsú and the chieftains Lél and Súr, were captured. They were taken to Augsburg and executed.

The Battle of Lechfeld had massive political consequences. The victory preserved the Kingdom of Germany and ended nomad incursions into Western Europe. Following the triumph, Otto's army proclaimed him the "father of the fatherland." This strengthened his political position significantly. In 962, Otto I was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. This transition was largely built upon the stability gained at Lechfeld.
