She was born in Constantinople in 1771. Her father was a sea captain from Hydra. Her mother came from a notable family. As a young girl, she loved the sea. She enjoyed swimming, fishing, and sailing. Her stepfather encouraged her to learn about sailing. This was unusual for women back then.

Bouboulina became very wealthy through her marriages. Her second husband was a rich shipowner named Dimitrios Bouboulis. He died in a battle in 1811. After he died, she took over his business. She used her money to buy shares in ships. She also joined a secret group called Filiki Etaireia. This group wanted Greece to be free from the Ottoman Empire. She even built a large warship. It was named the Agamemnon and had 18 cannons. This was the first warship in modern Greece.

In 1821, the Greek War of Independence began. Bouboulina used her ship to help the Greeks. She helped lead a blockade at the city of Nafplion. Many people respected her very much. They gave her nicknames like Kapetanissa, which means Captain. She was also called Kyra, which means Lady. She was very brave during many battles. She even traveled on horseback to give supplies to rebels. She helped provide money and ammunition to the fighters.

Life was not always easy for her. During a Greek civil war in 1824, she faced hard times. She supported a leader named Kolokotronis. Because of this, she was even put in prison. She lost her home in Nafplion and had to move. Later, she died in 1825 during a family feud. This happened after a fight involving a local family. It was a sad end for such a strong leader. Her life showed how much one person can do.

Even after her death, people remembered her great work. The Russian Navy gave her the title of Admiral. Many years later, the Greek Navy honored her too. In 2018, they gave her the title of Rear Admiral. Her story is a big part of Greek history. She proved that women could be great leaders at sea. Today, people still look at her as a hero. She remains a symbol of courage and strength.
