She was born in Constantinople. As a young girl, she loved the sea. Her stepfather helped her learn to sail. This was not common for women at that time.

Bouboulina became very wealthy after her second husband died. She used her money to help Greece win its freedom. She joined a secret group to fight for independence. She even built a large warship named Agamemnon. It had 18 cannons.

During the war, she led a fleet of ships. Many people called her "Captain." She helped block cities to help the Greek cause. She was also very brave in battles. Later, she faced hard times during a civil war. She lost her home and was even put in prison. Bouboulina died in 1825 during a family fight. After she died, the Russian Navy gave her the title of Admiral. The Greek Navy later gave her the title of Rear Admiral.
