He lived during a time of great change in Europe. He was born in 1757 in a village called Velestino. His family was quite wealthy in the Ottoman Empire. Rigas spent his life dreaming of freedom for many people. He wanted the people in the Balkans to live better lives. Today, many people in Greece call him a national hero.

He grew up with a great love for learning. Rigas studied at a school in Ampelakia and another in Zagora. The school in Zagora is still known as the "School of Riga."

He even worked as a teacher in a village called Kissos. Later, he moved to big cities like Constantinople and Bucharest. In Bucharest, he learned many different languages. He worked as a clerk for a prince and as a secretary. These jobs helped him learn about the wider world.

As he traveled, Rigas began to share big ideas. He read about the French Revolution and its new rules. He believed the people in his home lands deserved rights too.

In 1793, he went to Vienna to seek help. While there, he edited a Greek newspaper called Efimeris. He also drew a large political map of Greece. He even designed a special flag for a group of lands. He wanted these lands to work together in peace.

Writing was one of his most powerful tools. He wrote poems and pamphlets to inspire others to act. One of his most famous works was a song called "Thourios."

This song urged people to seek freedom. He also wrote about the rights of all citizens. Sadly, his bold ideas made the leaders of the Ottoman Empire angry. He was arrested while traveling to Venice in 1798. He was taken to Belgrade, where he died after being caught by authorities.

Even though he died young, his ideas lived on. Rigas used common Greek words so everyone could understand him. This helped make his message reach many people.
