After his studies, he worked as a teacher in Kissos. He later moved to Constantinople to work as a secretary. Eventually, he arrived in Bucharest, the capital of Wallachia. In Bucharest, he became a clerk for Prince Nicholas Mavrogenes. He used this time to learn many different languages.

During his travels, Rigas became interested in political change. He learned about the French Revolution. He believed the Christian subjects of the Ottoman Empire deserved self-determination. This means they should have the right to govern themselves. He met with Greek Orthodox bishops and guerrilla leaders to build support. He even wrote a Greek version of "La Marseillaise." This was the famous anthem of the French revolutionaries. He wanted to inspire people to seek liberty through his writing.

In 1793, Rigas moved to Vienna. This city was a major center for the Greek community.

While in Vienna, he worked as an editor for a Greek newspaper called "Efimeris." He also published a large political map of Great Greece. This map included Constantinople and many other areas. He also printed pamphlets based on the principles of the French Revolution. One important document was the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen." He wanted to spread these ideas to start a Pan-Balkan uprising.

To help his cause, Rigas designed a special flag.

This flag was meant for a envisioned pan-Balkan Federation. He hoped different groups in the Balkans would work together. He wrote a famous battle-hymn called "Thourios" in 1797. In this poem, he urged people to seek freedom. He famously wrote that it is better to live one hour free than forty years as a slave. He used "demotikì," or common Greek, so everyone could read his work. This helped his message reach many different people.

His bold actions eventually led to his death. Rigas tried to meet Napoleon Bonaparte in Venice. However, he was betrayed by a Greek businessman named Demetrios Oikonomos Kozanites. He was arrested in Trieste by Austrian authorities. Austria was an ally of the Ottoman Empire at that time. He was sent to Belgrade and imprisoned. In 1798, he and five collaborators were executed by strangulation. Their bodies were thrown into the Danube River. Before he died, he said his country would soon reap glorious fruits.
