Konstantinos Kanaris was a Greek statesman and an admiral. He is remembered as a national hero of the Greek War of Independence. This war took place between 1821 and 1829. Kanaris was a vital maritime leader for the Greek revolutionaries. He helped shape the early years of the modern Greek state. His life moved from the deck of a ship to the highest offices of government.

Kanaris grew up on the island of Psara in the Aegean Sea. While official navy records say he was born in 1795, historians believe 1790 or 1793 is more likely. He became an orphan at a young age. To survive, he became a seaman. He started his career as a boy on a brig owned by his uncle, Dimitris Bourekas. This early training prepared him for his future naval career. He learned the skills necessary to command ships in dangerous waters.

During the Greek War of Independence, Kanaris became famous for using fire ships. A fire ship is a vessel used to attack and destroy enemy boats by setting them on fire. In June 1822, he led a famous mission near the island of Chios. On a moonless night, his crew destroyed the flagship of the Ottoman Grand Admiral, Nasuhzade Ali Pasha. The attack happened during a Bayram celebration. The flagship's powder store caught fire, killing everyone on board.

This victory made Kanaris a national hero.

War brought great hardship to Kanaris and his home. In June 1824, the Ottoman fleet captured the island of Psara. Many people on the island were killed or sold into slavery. Kanaris managed to flee, but he did not stop fighting. He led a daring raid on Alexandria in 1825. He tried to use fire ships to destroy the Egyptian fleet. However, the wind failed just as the Greek ships entered the harbor. This caused the mission to fail.

After the war, Kanaris transitioned into a political career. He became an officer in the new Hellenic Navy. He reached the rank of admiral and worked with Ioannis Kapodistrias. Kapodistrias was the first Governor of independent Greece. Kanaris remained a close ally until Kapodistrias was assassinated in 1831. After this, Kanaris retired to the island of Syros. He eventually returned to public life as a member of the Russian Party.

Kanaris served as the Prime Minister of Greece five different times. He was the second prime minister in 1844. He also served as the Minister of the Navy in 1854 during the Crimean War. He played a role in the 1862 movement that removed King Otto I. Under King George I, he served multiple terms in the 1860s. His most important work was ratifying the first two constitutions of Greece. These laws were passed in 1844 and 1864.
