He was a hero during the Greek War of Independence. This war lasted from 1821 to 1829. He was born on the island of Psara in the Aegean Sea. Historians think he was born around 1790 or 1793. He became an orphan when he was very young. To support himself, he worked as a seaman. He even worked as a boy on a ship owned by his uncle, Dimitris Bourekas.

Kanaris became a famous captain during the war. He was a specialist with fire ships. A fire ship is a boat used to start fires on enemy vessels. In June 1822, he led a very famous mission. He used a fire ship to destroy the Ottoman flagship near Chios. This happened while the admiral was having a celebration.

This brave act made him a national hero in Greece. He also led a daring raid on Alexandria in 1825. However, the wind failed and the mission did not work.

Life was very difficult for Kanaris and his people. In 1824, the Ottoman fleet captured his home island of Psara.

Many people from the island were killed or taken into slavery. Kanaris had to flee, but he kept fighting. He later worked closely with Ioannis Kapodistrias. Kapodistrias was the first Governor of Greece. After Kapodistrias was killed in 1831, Kanaris retired for a while.

Kanaris later returned to help lead the country. He was a very important member of the Russian Party. He served as the Prime Minister of Greece many times. He was the second prime minister in 1844. He also served as the Minister of the Navy in 1854.

He stayed active in politics until the very end. Kanaris died of a heart attack on September 2, 1877. He was still serving as the prime minister when he died.
