He lived during a time of big changes in Greek history. Athens was moving toward a new way of ruling called democracy. This meant more people could have a say in government. Themistocles was not from a rich or noble family. He was a populist who worked to help the common people. He spent time in markets and docks to talk to citizens. This helped him become a very powerful politician.

His main goal was to make the Athenian navy very strong. He knew that a large empire called Persia might attack Greece. In 483 BC, he convinced Athens to build a fleet. They built 200 triremes, which were fast ships with three rows of oars.

These ships were very important for the future of Athens. He also helped build a new port at Piraeus. This port had three natural harbors for the ships. This plan helped Athens become a great sea power.

When the Persians invaded in 480 BC, Themistocles was ready. He led the Athenian navy in two major battles. These were the battles of Artemisium and Salamis. At the Battle of Salamis, he used a clever trick. He lured the large Persian fleet into the narrow Straits of Salamis. This made it hard for the big Persian ships to move. The Greeks won a decisive victory there. This win was a turning point in the war.

Life was not easy for him after the great victory. Some people in Athens began to dislike his power. They thought he was too arrogant or proud. In 472 or 471 BC, they used a rule called ostracism. This meant he was sent away from his home in exile. He had to flee from southern Greece to stay safe. He eventually traveled to Asia Minor to find work. He even served the Persian king, Artaxerxes I.
