He lived during a time of big wars and changing rules. His father, Cleaenetus, was a wealthy man who worked as a tanner. This means he worked with leather. Cleon was one of the first leaders to get power from outside the usual rich groups. He did this by supporting poor citizens and new business people. He even helped them by increasing the pay for jury service. This extra money helped many people earn a living.

Cleon was a very strong and persuasive speaker. He used his voice to lead the Athenian Assembly. He often argued for a very tough military plan against Sparta. In 428 BC, the city of Mytilene revolted against Athens. Cleon wanted a very harsh punishment for the people there. He suggested killing all the adult men in the city. A man named Diodotus spoke against him. Diodotus won the debate by a very small margin. However, the Assembly still chose to execute about 1,000 leaders from the revolt.

War was a huge part of Cleon's life. He was elected as one of the ten generals in 424 BC. In 425 BC, Athens won a big battle at Pylos. This battle trapped 400 Spartan soldiers on the island of Sphacteria. Cleon told the leaders that taking the island would be easy. He promised he could do it in only 20 days. He accepted the job from the general Nicias. Cleon did keep his promise and took the island. Some people think a general named Demosthenes helped him win.

Cleon's life ended during a fight for the city of Amphipolis. In 422 BC, he led an army to try and take the city back. The Spartans had taken it from Athens. A Spartan general named Brasidas led the enemy. Cleon's army was defeated during this battle. A soldier called a peltast killed Cleon. Brasidas was also killed in the same fight. Because these two leaders died, the war changed. Both sides began to look for a way to make peace. The Peace of Nicias was signed in 421 BC.

History books can be tricky because of how people are described. Two famous writers, Thucydides and Aristophanes, wrote about Cleon. They both described him in a very negative way. Thucydides called him a violent man. Aristophanes made fun of him in plays. Some scholars think these writers were just being unfair. They might have had personal reasons to dislike him. For example, Cleon may have caused Thucydides to be sent away from Athens. Today, historians still debate if these writers were being honest or biased.
