He was born into a very powerful family called the Alcmaeonidae. His mother was Deinomache, who was related to the famous leader Pericles. Alcibiades was known for being very handsome and quite vain. He was also a student of the famous philosopher Socrates. Some people believed Socrates tried to teach him to be more moral. During a battle in 432 BC, Socrates even helped save his life.

His political life was full of big changes and many risks. In the early 410s BC, he wanted Athens to be more aggressive in war. He was a major supporter of a huge plan called the Sicilian Expedition.

He argued that this mission would bring riches to Athens. He suggested a massive fleet of 140 ships and many soldiers. However, a religious scandal happened during the preparations for this trip. People accused him of damaging sacred statues called hermai. This made many people in Athens turn against him.

Because of these charges, Alcibiades had to flee his home city. He went to live in Sparta and became a strategic advisor. He helped Sparta by suggesting ways to attack Athens. For example, he helped suggest the capture of Decelea.

But he also made many enemies while living in Sparta. Eventually, he left Sparta and went to live in Persia. There, he worked as an advisor to a leader named Tissaphernes.

His life was a series of many shifts in loyalty. Athenian allies eventually helped him return to his home city. Once back in Athens, he became a general again. He used clever and unusual ways to win battles. He often won cities through negotiation or trickery instead of long sieges. These victories helped bring Athens and Sparta toward a peace agreement. Despite these successes, his many enemies never went away. He was eventually forced to leave Athens a second time.

In the end, Alcibiades lived a very complicated life. He took refuge in Persian lands after his second exile. Sadly, he was assassinated there, possibly because of Sparta.
