He was a member of the powerful Alcmaeonid family. His mother was Deinomache, who was the cousin of the famous leader Pericles. This family connection gave him significant social standing in Athens. Alcibiades was also known for his physical beauty and his vanity. He was famously a student of the philosopher Socrates.

Some believed Socrates taught him to try and improve his character. During the Battle of Potidaea in 432 BC, Socrates reportedly saved his life.

His political career was defined by shifting allegiances and aggressive strategies. In the early 410s BC, he pushed for a more forceful Athenian foreign policy. He was a primary advocate for the Sicilian Expedition. This was a massive military plan to attack Syracuse in Sicily. Alcibiades argued that this campaign would expand the Athenian empire. He also claimed it would bring great wealth to the city. To support this, he suggested increasing the fleet size significantly. He proposed 140 galleys and over 5,100 men at arms.

However, political scandal interrupted these military preparations. A religious crisis occurred when sacred statues called hermai were mutilated.

These statues featured the head of the god Hermes. Alcibiades was accused of sacrilege, which is a crime against religion. His political enemies used these charges to attack his character. Although he asked for an immediate trial to clear his name, he was denied. He was forced to flee Athens while the fleet was setting sail. This event marked the beginning of his long period of exile.

During his first exile, Alcibiades changed his loyalty to Sparta. He served as a strategic advisor to the Spartan government. He helped suggest major campaigns that weakened Athens. One such suggestion was the capture of Decelea. He also helped organize revolts among several Athenian subjects.

These actions played a significant role in the eventual undoing of Athens. However, he also created powerful enemies while living in Sparta. This led him to defect once more, this time to Persia. He worked as an advisor to the Persian satrap, Tissaphernes.

Eventually, Athenian allies helped secure his recall to his home city. Upon his return, he served as a general, or strategos. He led a series of Athenian victories during this time. Alcibiades preferred unconventional military tactics over traditional methods. Instead of long sieges, he often won cities through negotiation or treachery. These successes were vital to the Athenian war effort. They eventually forced Sparta to seek a peace agreement with Athens. His ability to win battles made him a crucial leader once again.

Despite these military successes, his political instability continued. He made many enemies through his unpredictable behavior. Eventually, his opponents succeeded in exiling him from Athens for a second time. He fled to Persian territory to find safety. While in exile, he was eventually assassinated. Historical reports suggest that Sparta may have instigated his death.

His death marked the end of a career that had shaped the war.

Historians often debate the impact of his leadership. Some scholars argue that the Sicilian Expedition might have succeeded under his command. They suggest that if Nicias had not led the mission, the disaster might have been avoided. Alcibiades remains a complex figure in ancient history. He demonstrated immense talent in both politics and war. Yet, his propensity for making enemies prevented him from staying in power. His life illustrates the volatile nature of Athenian politics during the Peloponnesian War.
