He is best known for his book, the History of the Peloponnesian War. This book tells the story of a huge war between Athens and Sparta. It covers events from the fifth century BC until the year 411 BC. Many people call him the father of "scientific history." This is because he used strict rules to find the truth. He did not blame the gods for what happened in the world. Instead, he looked for real causes and used evidence to explain things.

To write his history, Thucydides followed a very careful way of working. He did not just guess about the past. He interviewed people who actually saw the events with their own eyes. He also looked at many written documents to check his facts. He wanted to understand why people acted the way they did during crises. He studied how human nature affects people during wars or plagues. This helped him explain why people make certain choices when they are afraid.

We know a few things about his life, but much is still a mystery. He was born in Athens to a father named Olorus. He was a general for the Athenian people. During the war, he was sent to lead near Thasos in 424 BC. A Spartan general named Brasidas attacked the city of Amphipolis. Thucydides tried to help, but he did not arrive in time. Because the city fell, the people of Athens blamed him. They sent him away from his home into exile.

Being an exile actually helped Thucydides become a better historian. Since he lived away from Athens, he could travel and see both sides of the war. He likely used wealth from his family's gold mines in Thrace to pay for his research. He spent a lot of time writing and studying the conflict. His book is divided into eight books today. These divisions were likely made later by scholars in the Library of Alexandria. His writing was so important that it was studied for hundreds of years.

Today, students still study his work in many places. People at universities and military colleges read his books to learn about politics. He is often linked to a school called political realism. This idea says that leaders often act out of fear or self-interest. His writing about the leader Pericles is also very famous.

Even though he lived thousands of years ago, his ideas still matter. He wanted his history to be a treasure that would last for all time.
