He lived during the 5th century BC. He was born in a city called Halicarnassus. This city is now known as Bodrum in Turkey. At that time, his home was part of the Persian Empire. Herodotus is famous for writing a huge work called the Histories. Many people call him "The Father of History." This title was given to him by a Roman speaker named Cicero. His writing helps us understand the past.

His book tells the story of the Greco-Persian Wars. These were big conflicts between different lands. He wrote about many famous battles. Some of these battles were at Marathon and Thermopylae. He also wrote about Salamis, Plataea, and Mycale. Herodotus did not just write about fighting. He shared details about different cultures and lands. He wrote about how people lived and what they believed. This makes his work a great source of extra information. He wanted to show the whole picture of the world.

Herodotus was a great traveler who loved to learn. He probably traveled to Egypt to see things for himself. He may have gone to Tyre and Babylon too. He used what he saw to write his stories. He also wrote down what other people told him. This helped him learn about many different places. Later, he moved to the city of Athens. He liked the way the people in Athens lived. The people of Athens even gave him a reward of 10 talents. This was a large amount of money for his hard work.

Not everyone liked the way Herodotus wrote. Some people in his time thought he told too many legends. They thought his stories were just for fun. A writer named Thucydides was one of his biggest critics. Thucydides wrote about the Peloponnesian War. He thought Herodotus did not have enough control over his stories. Some even called him "The Father of Lies." However, many modern experts have found his facts are correct. Archaeologists and historians have proven many parts of his work are true.

Herodotus shared his work in a very special way. He did not just hand out books. He read his stories out loud to large crowds. He often did this at big festivals like the Olympic Games. One story says he read his whole work in one sitting. The crowd gave him great applause when he finished. This was a common way to share ideas back then. His work is the earliest Greek prose that we still have today. He changed how people record the stories of the world.
