He was likely born in Amiternum around 86 BC. His family was from the Sabine region. They were part of the equestrian order. This meant they were citizens but not in the highest ruling class. Some people think he might have been born in Rome instead. During a war, his parents had to hide in Rome for safety. This might be why he received such a good education.

Sallust had a busy and sometimes difficult career in public life. He served as a military tribune in the 60s BC. Later, he became a plebeian tribune in 52 BC. During this time, he was very active in Roman politics. He even helped pressure the famous leader Cicero during a trial. After he was removed from the senate in 50 BC, he joined Julius Caesar. He helped Caesar during the civil war from 49 to 45 BC. He even commanded ships to help move supplies during a campaign in Africa.

His time as a governor changed his life forever. Caesar appointed him as the governor of Africa Nova. He was not a famous general, but he was good at organizing supplies. While he was there, he became very wealthy. However, people accused him of being dishonest to get that money. He faced charges of corruption and extortion when he returned to Rome. Only the influence of Julius Caesar helped him avoid being punished.

Sallust eventually left politics to focus on writing history. He used his wealth to build beautiful gardens on the Quirinal hill. These became known as the Gardens of Sallust. He wrote several important books about the past. One book was about the conspiracy of a man named Catiline. Another book was about the Jugurthine War in Numidia. He also wrote a large work called the Histories, though only small pieces remain today.

His writing had a very specific message about the world. Sallust believed that Rome was experiencing a moral decline. He thought that having too much wealth and power made people less virtuous. He used his history books to show how Roman politics were changing. He was influenced by a Greek historian named Thucydides. Even though he was often bitter about the leaders of his time, his work survived. Today, his books help us understand the struggles of the Roman Republic.
