Thucydides was a very careful writer. He did not say that gods caused events. Instead, he looked for real causes. He used facts and talked to people who saw the war. Some call him the father of scientific history. This is because he used strict rules to find the truth. He also studied how people act during hard times, like wars or sickness.

Thucydides had a busy life. He was a general for Athens. During one war, he could not save a city called Amphipolis. Because of this, the people of Athens sent him away. He lived in exile for a while. This gave him a chance to see both sides of the war. He used his wealth to study and write. He wanted his work to be a treasure for all time.
