They formed a group called the Delian League in 478 BC. The group was made to fight the Persian Empire.

Athens was the leader of this group. Athens was a great power on the sea.

Most members chose to pay money instead of sending soldiers. They kept this money in a treasury on the island of Delos. This is how the group got its name.

Over time, things began to change. Athens used the money to build more ships. They also used the funds to make their own city beautiful. In 454 BC, Athens moved the money to their own city.

This made the other cities feel less free. Athens began to rule the members like an empire. Some cities tried to leave, but Athens used force to stop them. This tension led to the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. The League ended when that war was over in 404 BC.
