These clubs helped protect holy places. They also helped run big games. One famous club was the Delphic Amphictyony. It helped the temples of Apollo and Demeter.

Members of the club had special jobs. They met in the spring and the fall. They followed strict rules to be fair. The club could give out fines to people who broke rules. They could even start sacred wars to protect holy sites.

One war happened because a city called Krissa charged a tax. This tax made it hard for people to visit the temple. The club fought a war against Krissa for ten years. After that, they held the Pythian Games every four years.

Members had to make a serious promise. They swore to help the club. The rules said no member should be wiped out in war. They also said no one could cut off a member's water. This helped the groups work as a team for a long time.
