It sat near the sea in Italy. Settlers from Greece founded the city around 720 BC. Sybaris became very rich. The land was great for farming. The city also had a busy port. Because of this, it was a very wealthy place.

The people of Sybaris loved luxury. They were famous for big feasts and fine things. They even made rules to protect new recipes from chefs.

But the city had enemies. A nearby city called Kroton fought them. In 510 BC, Kroton won a big battle. They destroyed Sybaris. The people had to leave. Later, people tried to build new cities on the same spot. These cities were called Thurii and Copia. Over time, a river covered the ruins with dirt. People forgot the city was there. In 1932, workers found the ruins again. Today, you can still see parts of the old city. It is a very important place to study.
