The city sat on a wide, flat plain. This land was very good for growing food. Two rivers, the Crati and the Coscile, flowed near the city. The city was also close to the sea. This made it easy for ships to visit the port. Because the land was so rich, the city became very wealthy. It was known as the richest Greek colony in its time.

Building a successful city takes many steps. First, people must find the right place to live. Around 720 BC, settlers from Greece arrived to start Sybaris. They came from places like Achaea and Troezen. These people wanted better farmland for their families. They built their homes near the water and the rivers.

Over time, the city grew much larger. It became a powerful leader in the area. Sybaris even ruled over 25 other cities and many tribes. It was the largest Greek city in all of Italy.

History tells us many stories about the people of Sybaris. They were famous for loving luxury and big feasts. Some people were so wealthy that they became legendary. A man named Smindyrides was said to be incredibly rich. He even traveled on a ship with fifty oars.

The city was also very smart about new ideas. They created rules to protect the recipes of chefs. This was like a modern law for new inventions. This helped bakers and cooks keep their special ideas safe for one year. These details show how important and fancy the city felt.

However, the city faced many hard times and wars. A neighbor city called Kroton became a great enemy. In 510 BC, a big battle happened between them. The people of Kroton won the fight. They destroyed the city of Sybaris and forced people to leave.

Later, other groups tried to build new cities on the same spot. They built cities named Thurii and Copia. These new cities sat on the same grid as the old ones. Many years passed, and the cities were eventually lost to history.

Today, we can still learn from the ruins of Sybaris. For a long time, the city was buried under river dirt. This happened because the Crati river moved sediment over the site. In 1932, workers began to dig and find the ruins again.

You can find these remains southeast of Sibari in Italy. The site is deep below the ground today. Because it is so low, workers must use pumps to remove water. Even though it is hidden, Sybaris remains a very important piece of history.
