It sat near the mouth of the Tiber River. The name Ostia comes from a Latin word meaning "mouth." This city served as a major port for the city of Rome. Ships arrived here to bring food and other goods. Because of the river, sand built up over many years. This caused the coastline to change. Now, the city sits away from the sea.

It started as a military camp called a castrum. This camp had a rectangular shape. Two main roads crossed in the center. One road was called the cardo. The other was the decumanus maximus. These roads went through four gates in the walls. The walls were thick and made of stone blocks. This layout helped people move through the city easily.

History tells us that Ostia was very old.

Legend says King Ancus Marcius founded the colony. An inscription suggests the military camp existed in the 7th century BC. The oldest ruins found so far are from the 4th century BC. Later, the city became a naval base. During the Punic Wars, it had a big military role. By the 2nd century BC, it was a busy place for grain. This grain was sent to feed the people in Rome.

Life in Ostia was very busy and full of detail.

People even had a firefighting service to keep them safe. There were many shops, taverns, and inns for travelers. Archaeologists found eighteen Mithraea for religious groups. They also found the Ostia Synagogue. This is the oldest synagogue found in Europe.

Over time, the city faced many big changes.

Pirates once attacked the town and set the port on fire. Later, the Roman Empire grew and built huge new harbors. One of these was a hexagonal harbor built by Trajan. Eventually, the city began to change again. Some areas became luxury homes for rich people. After the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, the city decayed. Sand dunes eventually covered the ruins. This helped preserve the buildings for us to see today.
