Antium was a famous coastal town in ancient times. It sat in a region called Latium, south of Rome. Today, this place is known as Anzio and Nettuno. The town was very important for many different people. It served as a strong base for the Volsci people. Later, it became a major part of the Roman world.

The town was built to be very safe. It sat on high ground near the Capo d'Anzio. People built thick walls to protect the settlement. They even dug a deep ditch around it. Some of these walls used rectangular blocks of tufa stone. Archaeologists found parts of these walls in 1897. A nearby town called Caenon served as its port.

History shows many changes for Antium over the years. The Volsci people lived there for a long time. In 468 BC, the Roman leader Titus Quinctius captured the town. The Romans then set up a new colony there. In 338 BC, the town became a Roman colony with citizenship. It later became a municipium in 317 BC. This meant it had its own local leaders.

During the Roman Empire, Antium was a very wealthy place. It was a "breadbasket" that provided food for Rome. Many emperors loved the beautiful seaside villas there. The emperor Nero was even born in Antium. He built a huge home called the Domus Neroniana. He also built a new harbor for ships. Many famous statues were found in these ruins.

Eventually, many hard times came to the town. Different groups like the Vandals and Goths attacked it. These attacks happened during the 5th and 6th centuries. Because of this, people eventually moved away. They began living in a place called Nettuno instead. Today, we look at these ruins to learn about the past. The history of Antium is still very important to us.
