It is one of the most important stories in ancient Greek culture. Many famous poems and plays tell the story of this great war. The most famous works are the Iliad and the Odyssey. These were written by a poet named Homer. The Iliad tells of a short time during the tenth year of the siege. The Odyssey tells of the hero Odysseus on his long journey home.

These stories helped shape how people thought about heroes and gods for centuries.

The legend begins with a quarrel among the goddesses.

Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited to a wedding. She left a golden apple that said "for the fairest." Three goddesses, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, all claimed the prize. They asked a Trojan prince named Paris to decide. Each goddess offered him a special bribe to win his favor. Athena offered wisdom and skill in battle. Hera offered power over Asia. Aphrodite offered him the love of Helen, the Queen of Sparta.

Paris chose Aphrodite, which led to the war.

When Paris took Helen to Troy, King Menelaus of Sparta was very angry.

He called upon the kings of Greece to help him. Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, led a large army to the city of Troy. The war lasted for ten long years. Many famous warriors fought in these battles. Achilles was one of the greatest Greek heroes. His mother, the sea-nymph Thetis, tried to make him immortal. Some stories say she bathed him in the river Styx.

Many heroes like Hector and Paris died during the conflict. The city was burned, and the Greeks took many treasures. Some Greeks did not return home safely after the fighting stopped. This ending is a very famous part of the ancient stories.

For a long time, people thought the war was only a myth.

However, an archaeologist named Heinrich Schliemann found ruins in modern-day Turkey. He believed the site of Hisarlık was the real Troy. Most scholars now agree that a real city was there. They think the stories might be based on real battles from the Bronze Age. Some experts suggest the war happened around 1194–1184 BC.
