Most people know him from the Iliad, an ancient poem by Homer. In this story, he is a leader of a tribe called the Myrmidons. Achilles was the son of Peleus, a king, and Thetis, a sea goddess.

His life was filled with great strength and many famous adventures. He was described as a very tall and striking man. Some old accounts even say he had eyes like a lion.

Achilles had a very special and unusual upbringing. As a child, he lived in a place called Phthia. He grew up alongside his close friend, Patroclus. A wise centaur named Chiron was his teacher.

Chiron taught him many skills, such as medicine and how to play the lyre. Some legends say Achilles was even given wings on his feet. These wings belonged to a figure named Arke. This would explain why he was called "Swift-Footed." His education helped him become a powerful leader and fighter.

Many stories tell us about how Achilles became almost impossible to hurt. One famous legend says his mother, Thetis, dipped him into the River Styx.

She did this when he was just an infant to make him immortal. However, she had to hold him by his left heel. Because her fingers touched that spot, the water could not protect it. This made his heel his only weak point in his whole body. Later writers, like Statius in the first century CE, helped spread this specific story. Other tales suggest his mother tried to burn away his mortal parts with fire.

Achilles played a huge role in the famous Trojan War. He was a central figure in many battles fought near the city of Troy. One of his most notable feats was defeating the Trojan prince, Hector.

Even though he was a mighty warrior, he did not live a long life. Many sources agree that he was killed near the end of the war. The legend says that Paris shot him with an arrow. This arrow hit his vulnerable heel and caused his death.

We still use the name of this hero in our world today. The term "Achilles' heel" is a common way to describe a weakness. It refers to a small flaw in someone who is otherwise very strong. We also use the name for the Achilles tendon in our bodies.
