The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus. He is the king of Ithaca. He travels for ten years to get home after the fall of Troy. These poems show how people struggle and persevere. They are foundational works of ancient Greek literature. Many people consider him one of the most influential authors ever.

How these stories reached us is a big mystery. Most researchers believe the poems were first shared orally. This means people sang or spoke them out loud. They were written in a special language called Homeric Greek. This language is a mix of different dialects. It uses features from the Ionic and Aeolic styles.

Even though the poems are often serious or tragic, they have humor too. Some parts of the poems include comedy and laughter. This shows that even great epics can be fun to hear. The poems were used to teach students in ancient Greece.

We do not know exactly who Homer was. His life is very obscure and full of legends. Many ancient stories say he was a blind bard. A bard is a singer who tells stories. Some legends say he lived in Ionia. This region is on the coast of modern-day Turkey. Other stories link him to the islands of Chios or Samos.
