The Trojan Horse is a famous story from Greek mythology. It describes a clever trick used to end the long Trojan War.

For ten years, the Greeks tried to capture the city of Troy. They could not break through the city walls by fighting alone. A Greek leader named Odysseus came up with a new plan. He decided to build a massive wooden horse to fool his enemies. This idea changed the course of the entire war.

According to the poet Virgil, the horse was built in just three days.

A man named Epeius helped with the construction. A group of elite Greek warriors hid inside the hollow belly of the horse. Some ancient sources say there were 30 men inside. Other accounts suggest there were 40 soldiers. They waited quietly while the Trojans looked at their new prize. This was a very dangerous and quiet job for the men.

To make the trick work, the Greeks had to pretend to leave. They sailed their ships away to a nearby place called Tenedos. They left one man behind named Sinon to play a part.

Sinon told the Trojans that the horse was a holy gift. He said it was for the goddess Athena to help the Greeks get home safely. He even claimed the horse was built large so the Trojans could not take it inside. This was meant to make the gift seem even more special.

Not everyone in Troy believed the story. A priest named Laocoön warned the people to be careful. He even said he feared the Greeks, even when they brought gifts. A princess named Cassandra also said the horse would bring ruin. However, the Trojans did not listen to their warnings. They pulled the huge wooden horse inside their city walls.

That night, the hidden soldiers climbed out and opened the gates.

Today, people still use the name "Trojan horse" in many ways. It is a metaphor for any trick that hides a danger inside something good. You might hear this term used when talking about computers. A malicious program that tricks a person into running it is called a Trojan. Some historians also wonder if the story came from real history. They think it might be about a type of ship called a hippos. These ships sometimes had horse heads on them and were used for trade.
