These tales help explain how the world began and how it works. They describe the lives of many different gods and powerful deities. Many stories also focus on the adventures of legendary heroes.

Today, scholars study these myths to understand ancient religious and political life. These stories are now part of a larger group called classical mythology. This includes the myths of the Romans as well.

These stories were not always written in books. At first, they were part of an oral tradition. This means people sang or spoke the stories to one another. Singers from the Minoan and Mycenaean times likely began this work.

Eventually, these tales were written down in epic poems. The famous poems by Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey, tell of the Trojan War. Another poet named Hesiod wrote about the birth of the gods. He also wrote about the different ages of human life.

We can find these myths in many different places. Some are found in the works of great playwrights. Tragic writers like Sophocles and Euripides used myths for their plays.

Comic writers like Aristophanes also used them in their shows. We can also find myths in the writings of historians. People like Herodotus traveled to hear local versions of these legends. Even later writers in the Roman Empire kept these stories alive. This helped preserve details that might have been lost forever.

Art also tells us many important things about these myths.

Ancient Greeks painted scenes of gods and heroes on clay vases. These geometric designs from the eighth century BC show the adventures of Heracles. These pictures are very helpful to researchers today. Sometimes, the paintings show stories that are not in any books. They provide a visual way to see how people imagined their gods. These artifacts give us a second way to learn about the past.

Archaeologists help us connect these stories to real history.

In the nineteenth century, Heinrich Schliemann found the Mycenaean civilization. Later, Arthur Evans discovered the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. These finds help explain many questions about Homer's famous poems. We can even see names of gods in ancient Linear B script. These discoveries show that the myths have deep historical roots. The themes of these old stories still inspire artists and poets today.
