During this time, he faces many dangers. He meets many strange things on the sea. This story matters because it explores themes like homecoming and being a good guest. It also looks at how people test one another.

Odysseus faces many hard jobs on his long trip. He encounters a one-eyed giant named Polyphemus. Odysseus tells the giant his name is "Nobody" to escape. He also meets a goddess named Circe. She uses magic to turn his crew into pigs.

To stop her, Hermes gives him a special herb called moly. Odysseus also visits the land of the dead. There, he speaks to the spirit of a prophet named Tiresias. He even hears the song of the Sirens. These adventures make the story very exciting.

Many people believe a poet named Homer wrote these poems.

Scholars think these stories grew from an oral tradition. This means people told them out loud for a long time. A performer called a rhapsode would recite the poem to a crowd. They did not use music, but they used their voices. Because people could not always read, these performances were very important. The poem was likely composed in the 8th or 7th century BC. It became a major part of Greek culture by the mid-6th century BC.

The poem is divided into 24 parts called books.

Some people once thought these matched the Greek alphabet. However, most scholars think they were added much later. The story includes many real and mythical places. Some people think Ithaca is a real island. Others think the places are just for the story. The poem also shows many different types of people. It gives important roles to women and slaves. This is different from other old stories like the Iliad.

The first English translation came out in the 16th century. People still make new versions of the story today. In 2018, experts voted it a top narrative. This means they think it is one of the most lasting stories ever. It links to many other old tales from near the East. For example, it shares ideas with the Epic of Gilgamesh. Both stories feature heroes who travel to the edge of the earth. This shows how stories can connect different cultures.
