He lived during the Augustan period, a time of great change. He is best known for writing three major sets of poems. These include the Eclogues, which focus on country life. He also wrote the Georgics, which are poems about farming and working the earth.

His most famous work is the Aeneid, a massive epic poem. His writing was so important that it became a standard text for students to study. For many centuries, his work influenced almost all Western literature.

Writing these great works took many years of hard work. Virgil began the Eclogues around 42 BC. Later, he wrote the Georgics, which he dedicated to a man named Maecenas. Maecenas was a close adviser to the leader Augustus.

Virgil spent the last eleven years of his life working on the Aeneid. He even traveled to Greece in 19 BC to fix and revise it. He worked closely with other writers, like Varius Rufus, to finish his projects. These poems were not just stories, but carefully crafted pieces of art.

We know a little bit about Virgil's early life through old records. He was born around October 70 BC in a village called Andes. This village was located near Mantua in northern Italy.

Some stories say his father was a potter. Other accounts suggest his father worked for a man named Magius. Virgil grew up in Cremona before moving to Milan and then to Rome. As a young man, he studied law and public speaking. Eventually, he chose to use his talents for poetry instead.

Virgil was a unique person with a very specific personality. He was often described as tall, stout, and having a dark complexion.

His schoolmates thought he was very shy and kept to himself. Because he was so quiet, they even gave him the nickname "Parthenias." He also struggled with his health throughout his entire life. In 19 BC, he caught a fever while visiting a town near Megara. After traveling back to Italy by ship, he died in a place called Apulia. Even though he wanted his unfinished poem burned, Augustus ordered it to be published.

Virgil's influence stayed strong long after he passed away. In the Middle Ages, people even thought his name was linked to magic.
