He is known as a national poet of Italy. Many people call him "il Sommo Poeta," which means "the Supreme Poet." He is one of the "tre corone," or the three crowns of Italian literature. Dante changed how people wrote by using the vernacular. This means he used the common language of his home.

Most scholars at that time wrote only in Latin. By writing in his native Tuscan dialect, he helped create the modern Italian language. His work set a path for other great writers to follow.

Dante's most famous work is a poem called the Divine Comedy.

It was originally called Comedìa. Later, a writer named Giovanni Boccaccio added the word "Divina" to the title. The poem describes a journey through three places: Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Dante used a special way of rhyming called terza rima. This is an interlocking three-line rhyme scheme. His descriptions of these places gave ideas to many artists. He also wrote about his love for a woman named Beatrice Portinari. He said he fell in love with her at first sight when he was nine years old. This love helped him create a new style of poetry called dolce stil nuovo, or the "sweet new style."

Dante was born in Florence around May 1265.

His father was Alighiero di Bellincione, who was a businessman. His mother was named Bella. She passed away before Dante was ten years old. Dante's family belonged to a group called the Guelphs. At that time, Italian cities were often split between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. These groups fought for different kinds of power. Dante even fought in the Battle of Campaldino in 1289. He fought as a feditore, which means he was responsible for the first attack. This victory helped change the rules for how Florence was run.

To be a leader in Florence, Dante joined a guild.

He joined the Physicians' and Apothecaries' Guild around 1295. Apothecaries were people who sold medicine and books. This membership allowed him to hold public offices in the city. Dante served as a city prior, which was a very high position, in the year 1300. However, politics in Florence were very difficult and full of fighting. The Guelphs eventually split into the White Guelphs and the Black Guelphs. Dante belonged to the White Guelphs. This political struggle changed his life forever.

Dante was eventually forced to leave his home in exile.

In 1302, he was condemned to leave Florence for two years. He was accused of financial wrongdoing by the Black Guelphs. Because he was in Rome at the time, he could not defend himself. He was later sentenced to perpetual exile. This meant he could never return to Florence without being burned at the stake. He traveled to many places like Verona and Lucca. He lived as a guest in different regions. Dante died in September 1321. Today, his tomb is located in Ravenna, Italy.
