It was written by the Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio between 1348 and 1353. The title comes from two Greek words. The word "deka" means ten. The word "hemera" means day. Together, they mean a "ten-day event."

This title describes how the characters tell their stories. Some people think the title is a playful joke. It might mimic older books about the six days of creation. Boccaccio used the name to show how his characters create a new world through words. This book is a masterpiece of early Italian writing.

The book uses a frame story to hold everything together.

A group of ten young people flee from the city of Florence. They go to a secluded villa in Fiesole to escape the Black Death. This was a very serious sickness that affected the city. To pass the time, seven women and three men tell stories. They tell one story every night for ten nights. They also take breaks for chores and holy days. By the end of two weeks, they have shared 100 tales.

Each day has a special leader. One person is chosen as the King or Queen for the day. This leader picks a theme for all the stories told that night. Some themes are about the power of luck or human will. Other themes are about love stories that are happy or sad. Some stories focus on clever replies or funny tricks. One character named Dioneo is very witty. He is even allowed to pick any topic he wants for his tales.

Boccaccio included many different kinds of stories in his work. Some tales are about love and can be very romantic or tragic. Other stories use wit and practical jokes to teach life lessons. Some stories even mock the greed of the clergy in the church.

The stories show the tension between rich merchants and noble families. They also show the adventures of people who travel for work. Boccaccio did not invent every plot himself. He borrowed ideas from many places like India, Spain, and the Middle East. Some stories were already hundreds of years old when he wrote them.

This book has had a huge influence on other writers. One famous example is Geoffrey Chaucer and his book, The Canterbury Tales. The Decameron also uses a subtitle called "Prince Galehaut." This refers to a fictional knight who was a romantic go-between. Boccaccio hoped his stories would help young people fall in love. The stories can be seen as a way to explore human feelings. Even today, the book is a way to see how people lived long ago.
