The book tells a frame story. This is a story about other stories.

Ten young friends flee from Florence. They go to a villa in the countryside. They want to stay safe from the Black Death. This was a very bad sickness. To pass the time, they tell tales. Seven women and three men tell stories. They tell one tale every night. They tell one hundred stories in total.

Each day, one person is the leader. They are called the King or Queen. The leader picks a theme for the day. Some themes are about love. Some are about tricks or cleverness. Some stories are funny and some are sad. The tales show how people lived long ago. They also show how people deal with luck. Some stories even mock the leaders of the church. Boccaccio used many old stories from far lands. He made them into a great work of art.
