Appius is most famous for two huge building projects. First, he helped build the Appian Way, or Via Appia.

This was the first major road in Rome. It ran from the city toward the south to Beneventum. Second, he built the Aqua Appia. This was Rome's first aqueduct. An aqueduct is a structure that moves water into a city. These projects helped the city grow and stay strong.

Appius also changed the rules of how Rome was run. In 312 BC, he was elected as a censor. This was a job that lasted for five years. He wanted to give more power to regular people. He gave more voting power to those without land. He also let lower-class citizens join the Roman Senate. These changes were very controversial at the time. Many wealthy nobles were angry about his new rules.

Besides building things, Appius was a writer and a lawyer. He wrote books like Sententiae, which was a very early Roman book. He also wrote about laws and how to use them. He even helped change how Latin was written. He is credited with ending the use of the letter Z. Later, he served as a consul in 307 BC and 296 BC. He was also a dictator in 285 BC. He even led armies against the Samnites and Etruscans.

As he grew older, Appius became blind. Some ancient stories say this happened because of a curse. Even without sight, he remained a powerful leader. He gave a famous speech to the Senate. He told them that Rome would never surrender to King Pyrrhus. He is often remembered for his many different roles. Some see him as a great reformer for the people. Others saw him as a person who broke many traditions.
