The map shows where the city sits in this area. The city is part of the province of Caserta. For a long time, people have lived in this part of the world. Its name likely comes from the Etruscan word Capeva. This name means "City of Marshes."

Many different groups of people shaped the history of Capua. Long ago, people from the Villanovian civilization lived in the area. Later, the Oscans and the Etruscans grew the settlements. The Samnites also captured the city in about 424 BC. Eventually, the Romans took control of the region. They built the Via Appia to connect Capua to Rome. This was a very important military highway for Italy.

During the Roman era, Capua became a very wealthy place. The people there grew spelt, which is a type of grain. They also made wine, roses, and spices. The city was famous for making beautiful bronze objects. Capua was also known for gladiatorial combat. This was a type of fighting in large arenas. A famous leader named Spartacus emerged from the gladiatorial schools nearby in 73 BC.

Capua has faced many hard times throughout its long history. In 840 AD, a group called Saracen mercenaries burned the old city. Only one church, Santa Maria Maggiore, was left standing. A new city was built in 856 at a different site. This new location is called Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Later, the city saw more fighting during the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1860, the Battle of Volturnus took place near the city.

You can also visit the Museo Campano to see local treasures. This museum opened to the public in 1874. There are also many archaeological sites to explore nearby. These sites hold old tombs and beautiful bronze vases from long ago.
