Cumae was a very important ancient city in Italy.

It was the first Greek colony on the Italian mainland. People from Euboea moved there during the 8th century BCE. They chose a great spot on the Monte di Cuma hill. One side of the city faced the sea. The other side had very fertile ground for farming. This helped the people grow plenty of food.

This rich land helped the colony become very strong.

The Greeks used their ships to trade with many places. They built power by using the land and the sea. Because they were so successful, they helped start other cities. They sent people to found Zancle in Sicily. They also sent a group to start Tritaea in Achaea.

The Greeks also brought a new way of writing to Italy. They used the Euboean alphabet. This alphabet was changed by the Etruscans and then the Romans. It eventually became the Latin alphabet we use today.

Leadership played a big role in the history of Cumae. A leader named Aristodemus ruled the city for a while. He led the Cumaeans to victory in the Battle of Cumae in 524 BCE.

He also helped the city of Aricia fight against the Etruscans in 505 BCE. However, things changed when the nobles took control back in 490 BCE. They executed Aristodemus after a period of unrest. The city also had famous places like the Temple of Apollo. This temple sent the sacred Sibylline Books to the city of Rome.

Later, the Romans took control of the area. Cumae became a very popular place for wealthy Romans to live. They built large villas along the beautiful coast.

The Romans also built big things like central baths and an amphitheatre. They even dug long tunnels through the hills. One tunnel is called the Grotta di Cocceio. Another is the Crypta Romana, which is 180 meters long.

They also built a huge water system called the Aqua Augusta.

Today, we can still see the amazing history of Cumae. Many of the old ruins are in the Metropolitan City of Naples.

People have spent many years digging up treasures there. In 1896, Emilio Stevens found very old objects. Later, in 1992, workers found a temple of Isis by accident.

You can visit the archaeological museum to see these finds. The city remains a special place where the past meets the present.
