It sits right across a narrow stretch of water called the South Euboean Gulf. From the coast of Eretria, you can look across the water toward the region of Attica.

The site is very old and has many layers of history to find. People have lived in this area since the late Neolithic period, which was between 3500 and 3000 BC. Long ago, the first settlers lived on a flat plain. However, a nearby lagoon flooded that land. This forced the people to move their homes up to the high Acropolis.

As time passed, Eretria grew into a very important Greek city. In the 8th century BC, it was a wealthy place for trading goods. The city was so strong that it controlled several islands in the Aegean Sea.

Eretria even helped start new colonies in places like Italy and Sicily. The city was often involved in big fights with its neighbor, Chalcis. They fought a long war for control of the fertile Lelantine plain. Eretria lost that war and lost much of its land. Even after this, the city remained a famous place in the Greek world. Many great writers from ancient times wrote about it.

Eretria faced many hard times during its long history. In 490 BC, the Persian army attacked and burned the city.

This was a very sad time for the people living there. The victors destroyed the great temple of Apollo and took many citizens away. Later, the city was caught in many wars between Athens, Sparta, and Macedonia. During the Macedonian period, the city saw a new time of wealth. It grew even more with new buildings and longer city walls.

For a while, it was a place where famous painters and thinkers lived.

The Romans also became part of Eretria's story. In 198 BC, a Roman admiral named Lucius Quinctius Flamininus led an attack on the town.

The citizens eventually surrendered to the Roman forces. The Romans took many beautiful artworks back with them. Later, in 87 BC, the city was destroyed again during a war. Since then, the city has slowly declined. Today, many people visit to see what is left behind. Scientists from Greece and Switzerland still work there to study the ruins.

There are many amazing things to see at the site today. You can walk along the old city walls that were 4 km long.
