In the early 5th century BC, it became the main port for Athens. The city had three deep-water harbors named Cantharus, Zea, and Munichia. Long ago, Piraeus was actually an island. It was connected to the mainland by a low land bridge. This path was often flooded by sea water and was very muddy. Later, the land became dry and safe to cross at any time.

Many famous leaders helped shape the city in the past. Themistocles worked on the harbor and the city's defenses in 493 BC.

Builders also made the Long Walls to connect the port to Athens. In 483 BC, silver from nearby mines helped build 200 trireme ships. These ships were kept in special ship houses called neosoikoi. The city faced hard times when the Spartans attacked it. Later, the city was destroyed by the Roman Lucius Cornelius Sulla in 86 BC. It stayed quiet for many centuries until it grew again.

Modern Piraeus began to grow fast in the 19th century. This happened after Athens became the capital of Greece in 1832.
