The city was built about 40 km southeast of Pella. Pella was once the capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia. In the Roman period, the city grew into a very wealthy place. It even became the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia in 128 BC.

Through history, the city has changed many times. It was the second largest city in the Byzantine Empire. Later, the Ottomans conquered the city in 1430. For nearly five hundred years, it remained an important seaport under Turkish rule. During this time, churches, mosques, and synagogues stood side by side. From the 16th to the 20th century, it was the only Jewish-majority city in Europe. On 8 November 1912, the city passed from the Ottoman Empire to the Kingdom of Greece.

The city is famous for its beautiful and old buildings.
