The Kladeos River also borders the site to the west. Near the site, you can see the hills of Mount Kronos. In the past, the sea was much closer to this place. Today, the coast is about 22 kilometers away.

This town is famous for a nearby archaeological site. This site was a very important holy place for ancient Greeks.

The heart of the site was a sacred area called the Altis.

Some buildings were treasuries where city-states kept special items. Other areas were for exercise or for resting during festivals. The site was very large and spread out beyond its walls.

Ancient people held the Olympic Games here for a long time.

These games happened every four years from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. They were held to honor Zeus. People came from all over the Greek world to visit. This helped the Greeks feel like they were one nation. During the games, a special truce was made. This truce helped travelers move safely through the land. The modern Olympic Games were brought back in 1894 to honor these same ideas.

One of the most famous things was the Temple of Zeus.
