Abydos is one of the oldest cities in ancient Egypt. It sits in Upper Egypt, just west of the Nile River.

You can find it near the modern towns of El Araba El Madfuna and El Balyana. This place was a very important sacred site for many centuries. It was a center for worshiping important gods like Osiris and Isis.

Because it was so holy, many people wanted to be buried near it. This made the town grow in importance as a religious center.

Many kings, known as pharaohs, were buried in the area. One special place for these burials is called Umm el-Qa'ab.

This is a royal necropolis, which is a large city for the dead. The king Narmer was buried here during the First Dynasty. He is known as the founder of that first group of rulers. Other kings, like Aha, were also buried in this ancient cemetery. Even in the Twelfth Dynasty, a huge tomb was cut into the rock for Senusret III.

Building at Abydos happened in many steps over a long time. From the First Dynasty to the Twenty-sixth Dynasty, many temples were built on the same site.

At first, the temple was a simple enclosure with thin brick walls. Later, kings like Pepi I built much larger stone temples. These buildings grew in size and complexity as more rulers added to them. Some kings even built massive stone foundations to support the new structures. This long history of building shows how much the site meant to Egypt.

One of the most famous places to visit is the Temple of Seti I.

This temple was built to honor the king and his ancestors. It contains a very special wall called the Abydos King List. This list shows the names of many pharaohs from Menes to Ramesses I.

Some people call this list the "Rosetta Stone" of Egyptian archaeology. It is a vital tool for understanding the order of the kings. Near this temple, you can also see the Osireion, a mysterious structure.

Archaeologists still find amazing things in the ground at Abydos today. In 2021, they found what might be the oldest brewery in the world.

This brewery dates back to around 3100 BCE during the time of King Narmer. It was likely used to make beer for important royal rituals. Other finds include beautiful ivory carvings and colorful glazed tiles. These objects help us see the skilled work of ancient people. Even though some old buildings are now under modern towns, Abydos remains a place of wonder.
