A peninsula is a piece of land with water on most sides. This region sits at the very bottom of the Greek mainland. It is connected to the rest of the country by a narrow land bridge. This bridge is called the Isthmus of Corinth.

There are also wide, flat areas called lowlands. You can find these in the west and the south. The coast is very bumpy and indented. This creates many beautiful beaches for visitors to see.

Two groups of islands sit near the coast. The Argo-Saronic Islands are to the east. The Ionian Islands are to the west.

The history of this place is very long. People have lived here since prehistoric times. Ancient legends say a hero named Pelops conquered the land. This is how the name Peloponnesos came to be.

This happened in 776 BC. Famous cities like Sparta and Corinth were also located here. These cities were part of the heart of ancient Greece.

Many different groups have lived in the Peloponnese over time. The Romans took control of the area in 146 BC. Later, the Byzantine Empire ruled the land. During the Middle Ages, Slavic people moved into some areas.

Over many years, the culture became Greek again. The region has also seen many earthquakes in the past. This makes the land quite earthquake-prone. Even the island of Elafonisos was once part of the peninsula. An earthquake in 365 AD separated it from the mainland.

Today, the Peloponnese is divided into several parts. It is split into three main administrative regions. Most of the land belongs to the Peloponnese region. Some smaller parts belong to West Greece and Attica. There are seven major historical regions like Achaea and Laconia.
