The land here is very rugged and mountainous. Most of it is made of high mountain ridges. These ridges are part of the Dinaric Alps. The Pindus Mountains form a spine through mainland Greece. These mountains separate Epirus from Macedonia and Thessaly. Most of the region sits on the side that faces the wind. Winds from the Ionian Sea bring a lot of rain. In fact, Epirus gets more rain than any other part of Greece. The highest point is Mount Smolikas.
