Because it has so many plants and animals, it became Greece's first National Park in 1938. It is also a World Biosphere Reserve.

The shape of the mountain came from wind and rain over a long time.

Long ago, about one million years, huge sheets of ice called glaciers covered the mountain. When the weather got warmer, the ice melted away. The melting ice created many streams and rivers. One important river is called Enipeas, which flows from the mountain to the sea. The mountain also has many steep, rocky parts. Some peaks are almost vertical and look like a wall. These shapes make it a very exciting place for climbers to visit.

Many people have lived near or used the mountain throughout history. In ancient times, the city of Dion was a sacred place for the Macedons.

Later, during the time of the Ottoman Empire, the mountain was a hiding place for fighters. In the 1940s, the mountain was a center for the Greek Resistance during a war. There are also many old Christian sites on the mountain. For example, the Kanalon Monastery was started way back in the year 1055.
