It is one of the highest mountains in the whole country. The highest peak is called Liakouras, and it reaches 2,457 meters high. This range spreads over three areas called Boeotia, Phthiotis, and Phocis. To the northwest, it connects to Mount Giona. To the south, it meets Mount Kirphe. The mountains sit near the Gulf of Corinth.

The mountain is mostly made of limestone. It also has a lot of bauxite, which is an ore used to make aluminum. People have mined this ore since the late 1930s. This mining work has caused some damage to the land.

The weather on the mountain changes with the seasons. Winters are very cold, while summers stay cool. In the winter, the snow makes it a great place for sports. The Parnassos Ski Centre is the largest ski area in Greece.

It has 25 marked ski runs. The longest run is 2,500 meters long. In the three warm seasons, people use the many hiking trails. The melting snow is very important for the people living nearby. It provides municipal water for the surrounding communities.

Ancient stories tell us that Parnassus was a very holy place. Many Greek myths are set on these slopes. The Muses, who are spirits of music and poetry, were said to live here.

The god Apollo was also linked to the mountain. The famous musician Orpheus lived here with his mother, Calliope. Apollo even gave Orpheus a golden lyre to play. Other myths say the winged horse Pegasus lived here too. The mountain was also sacred to the god Dionysus.

Today, many people visit the National Park of Parnassus to see nature. The park was first started in 1938 to protect the land. It is now a protected area for birds and other wildlife.

You might see wolves, wild boars, or badgers in the wild. There are also special plants like the Parnassian peony. The park helps keep these living things safe. It is a special place where many different animals live together.

The name of the mountain has a mysterious history. Some thinkers believe the name comes from an old language called Luwian. They think it might mean "the mountain of the house of the god." However, there is no proof to show this is true. We do not know for sure who named the mountain.
