geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Bucegi Mountains are a beautiful part of central Romania. They sit just south of the city of Brașov. These mountains belong to a larger group called the Southern Carpathians. The highest point in this range is called Omu Peak. To the east, the land slopes down toward the Prahova Valley. This valley is a very popular place for many visitors.

Nature has carved amazing shapes into the high Bucegi Plateau. Wind and rain work together to change the rocks over time. This process creates strange figures like the Sphinx and Babele. Many people travel to see these unusual stone shapes. You can even take a cable car to reach the mountaintops. One cable car connects the Silva Hotel to the Babele Chalet. It is a wonderful way to see the high views.

People have found these mountains interesting for a very long time. Some believe this was the holy mountain of the Dacians. They called it Kogainon and thought a god lived in a cave there. Experts still study the name of the mountains today. Some think it comes from a word for forest moss or junipers. Others say it comes from the Slavic word for beech trees.

Many people visit the mountains to enjoy the outdoors. Sinaia is a famous resort known as the "Pearl of the Carpathians." You can visit Peleș Castle or the Sinaia Monastery there. Another town called Bușteni sits at an altitude of 800 to 900 meters. It has many hotels and places to eat. Visitors can go trekking on many attractive routes. You can also go skiing or sleighing during the winter months.

To keep the land safe, much of it is a protected area. This area is called the Bucegi Natural Park. It covers a huge space of 32,663 hectares. The park spreads across three different counties. These are Dâmbovița, Prahova, and Brașov. More than 60% of the park is covered in thick forests. This helps many different plants and animals live there safely.
