geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Bucegi Mountains are a prominent mountain range in central Romania. They are located just south of the city of Brașov. This range is a key part of the Southern Carpathians group. The highest point in the mountains is called Omu Peak. The eastern side of the range features a very steep slope. This slope drops down toward the Prahova Valley. This valley is home to many popular tourist destinations.

Geological forces and weather have shaped the high Bucegi Plateau. Wind and rain act on the rocks over long periods. This process creates spectacular figures in the stone. Two famous examples are the Sphinx and the Babele. These are unusual rock formations that attract many visitors. You can reach these mountaintops using a cable car. One specific cable car connects the Silva Hotel to the Babele Chalet. This allows people to see the unique landscape easily.

The name "Bucegi" is a subject of study for philologists. Philologists are experts who study the history of languages. There is no single agreed origin for the name. Some believe it comes from "buceag" or "bugeac." In the language of mountain people, this refers to forest moss. It can also mean the wilderness or junipers. Other linguists suggest a different source. Iorgu Iordan suggests the name comes from the Slavic word "buk." This word means "beech," which is a type of tree.

History and legend are deeply tied to this landscape. Some believe these mountains were the holy mountain of the Dacians. They called this sacred place Kogainon. According to these beliefs, the God Zalmoxis lived in a cave there. The mountains also have a history of borders and defense. The Rucăr-Bran Pass sits between the Piatra Craiului and Leaota ranges. This pass once had border crossings between Wallachia and Transylvania. The Bran Castle was used to defend this area.

Tourism is a major part of the mountain economy. The Prahova Valley contains the most ski resorts in Romania. Sinaia is one of the most famous resorts. It is nicknamed the "Pearl of the Carpathians." Visitors there can use ski lifts and cable cars for winter sports. Sinaia also holds many cultural sites. These include Peleș Castle, Pelișor Castle, and the Sinaia Monastery. There is also a Casino and the George Enescu Memorial House.

Another important town is Bușteni, located at an altitude of 800 to 900 meters. Bușteni provides many places for travelers to stay and eat. It offers hotels, rest homes, and chalets. People visit Bușteni to go trekking on many attractive routes. In the winter, visitors enjoy skiing and sleighing on slopes of varying difficulty. The town also features the Cantacuzino Castle and the Cezar Petrescu Memorial Museum. There is even a trout farm located in the area.

To protect these landscapes, the Bucegi Natural Park was established. People have made references to this area since the 15th century. A proposal for protection was first made in 1936. This was due to the diverse plants and animals. The protection was officially realized in 1990 through a ministerial order. The park is very large, covering 32,663 hectares. It spans across three counties: Dâmbovița, Prahova, and Brașov. More than 60% of this territory is covered by forests.
